Summer 2024 Update

The Barlaston Womblers have had a very successful month picking litter at the key entry points to the village.  Since Covid residents have ‘adopted’ a regular patch near to where they live and this works well and means a good impression is immediately created on entering the village!  We do miss the Group Wombles though, where we can swap stories of strange finds and generally have a moan about Tossers – the drivers that think it’s ok just to toss their rubbish out of the window as they’re driving!  The real worry is the number of bottles we find – are these people really drinking vodka, whisky, wine and beer as they’re DRIVING??!!  We are liaising with SBC but it appears to be a national problem, not easily solved.  August came to an end with a great opportunity for the Womblers to get together at Wedgwood’s Future Fest event. On Saturday 31st August 25 womblers arrived from all over the village for a Walk n’ Womble and we litter-picked all around Wedgwood, Hem Heath woods, Wedgwood Drive, Queen Mary’s Drive, Blurton Rd & Old Rd, collecting around 20 bags.  The enticement was a free ice-cream and this was very much appreciated!

The Barlaston Strollers and Striders have had some great walks this month – the first outing was along the canal to the Harecastle Tunnel where we were lucky enough to meet Carl who gave us a fantastic talk on the history of canals and the tunnel in particular.  The next one was a trip to Shugborough where we visited the walled garden and picked up some good tips on growing and using herbs to promote wellbeing.  Our reputation as a Global Walking Group was confirmed once more as Janette, walk leader Jo’s sister, joined us from Australia – it was an expensive trip but she said it was worth it!!

We meet at the Plume of Feathers carpark on the FIRST & THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EVERY MONTH, ready to walk at 10am prompt.  If you’d like to know more please give Sandie (Group Leader) a call on 07496 088544.  September walks will be on the 4th and 18th of the month if you’d like to join us.

The next Film Night is scheduled for 19th October and we will be showing Fly me to the Moon.  It’s a romantic comedy drama starring Scarlett Johansson & Channing Tatum and sounds good fun!  There’s always a great atmosphere in the village hall on Film Nights – if you haven’t had a chance to go to one yet, put the date in your diary now!  Doors open at 7pm, film starts at 7.30pm.

The Silver Surfers group is currently on a Summer Break which will now be extended to October.  Discussions are taking place with another group The Digital Angels, and the Autumn Silver Surfers sessions are currently being planned.  If you need help in the meantime however, you know how helpful our Techie Gurus are so don’t hesitate to give them a ring. You can contact Steve on 07861 617932 or Tony on 07783 009194.  Start dates and location to be confirmed.
