The Silver Surfers group returned on the 17th October partnering with the ‘Digital Angels’ to provide a free workshop on how to recognise & not fall victim to SCAMS! It was informative and entertaining and together with our Tech Gurus they highlighted essential information on how to spot scams before falling foul of their very convincing instructions. The presentation was well attended and the Gurus followed up on some of the issues covered in the following session. Spread the word that the Silver Surfers are back – every 2nd & 4th Thursday from 10 -12 in the Ruth Dickson room to the rear of the Village Hall. To ensure a one-to-one, contact Steve on 07861 617932 or Tony on 07783 009194 to book a slot.
The First Aid Refresher Course was very well received and members of the Parish Council, St. John’s church, the Voluntary Car Scheme, Walk Leaders and Womblers and others brushed up their skills on CPR and safe use of a defibrillator, fractures, minor injuries and medical injuries. It was considered to be very helpful and informative and everyone felt more confident in being able to assist someone in distress after the workshops. Thank you Steve Hallam of SH First Aid Training.
The Barlaston Strollers and Striders stayed local in October and despite a damp & misty start to the month enjoyed the walks. Unusually, there were no incidents other than Sandie having to blow her whistle (twice!) to get the group’s attention (too much chatting as per). We met for Apres at The Upper House - the staff were very friendly and helpful and we had the lounge to ourselves. Christmas strolls, strides & celebrations will be on the 4th December so remember to book your place early so that Chef Blackie can plan the menu and start mulling the wine!! Lunch will comprise of homemade soup and sandwiches + a portion of chips, followed by mince pies and/or chocolate gateau. Find your Santa Onesie and antlers and we’ll be good to go!! For more information on the walks please give Sandie (Group Leader) a call on 07496 088544 or keep an eye on the Facebook Hub. November walks will be on 6th and 20th if you are able to join us!
The Barlaston Womblers have been busy as always. Green bags are regular sightings in Barlaston and a sign that a Wombler has been out litter-picking in the area. All the main arterial road in to and through the village are covered and we have Mandy, our resident Wombling Angel, working on Brookhouse Drive, Station Road, Queen Mary’s Drive, the canal towpath and roads in between! Bags can be collected from the Dougie Mac shop in Orchard Place and Shaina our Parish Councillor also has a supply in her shop Lighting the Way. If you are picking up litter regularly please let Michala know (07970 593910) as it’s useful for other womblers to know which areas have already been covered and it’s also nice for the group to make contact with each other. Hopefully we will be having our annual Group CHROMBLE (ahem – Christmas Womble) next month, so keep a look out for more info on the Barlaston Womblers Facebook group.
We had a great turn-out for Film Night showing Empire of Light starring Olivia Coleman. It wasn’t our usual ‘feel good’ movie and addressed some serious and challenging topics including race, misogyny and mental health but as people left the majority of the audience said they had really enjoyed it! Huge thanks to the front of house ladies, the kitchen gang, and doing a great job in Tony’s absence was Steve working the technical bits. The chair-stackers were particularly efficient and it was suspected that they felt in need of a pint in the Duke to cheer up! The next Film Night will be on January 18th 2025.
We had some FABULOUS entries to the Facebook Photo Competition this month. The theme was ‘Autumn Colours’ and Josh Dwine’s image captured the seasonal golden hue beautifully with his pic of Wedgwood Drive. There are lots of talented photographers in Barlaston and if you want to see the other entries please take a look at our Facebook Group or the Barlaston Community HUB. Next month’s theme will be ‘GETTING READY FOR CHRISTMAS’ so look out for the notification on Facebook towards the end of the month.
And last but not least we are busy planning for the annual Golden Agers Tea Party on the 8th December. Please email us to confirm your attendance and reserve your place or phone Michala on 07970 593910 or Sandie on 07496 088544. Lovely Shaina, our Parish Councillor, at Lighting the Way also has a supply of tickets so pop in and see her at Orchard Place soon!
