Let’s start by getting into the Christmas spirit with our Facebook Photo Competition winner! This month’s theme was ‘Getting Ready for Christmas’ and we congratulate the U3A Hand Stitching & Yarncraft group for this fabulous display on the Orchard Place Post Box - thank you for putting a smile on so many peoples’ faces! The competition was close at times with the Flaxman light display taking an early lead but the votes for the Christmas topper kept coming!! The monthly photo competition is very popular and if you want to see other entries over the year take a look at our Facebook Page or the Barlaston Community HUB. We look forward to seeing many more fun, interesting and fabulous photos in 2025!!
We had an action-packed start to the month with the Attic Sale: Huge thanks to the organising team - Irene, Sue T & Sue P, Janet, Chris and Margaret, our sponsors, and all who came❣️ It was really well attended and all the cake, tombola prizes and raffle tickets sold out😀🎉🎟️ Every event also needs supporters and helpers and this year was no exception; Sue Tudor, Chair of Barlaston Parish Council ran the raffle with help from the ‘Warm Space’ members at the Barlaston Health Centre, who also generously donated prizes. The kitchen gang comprising Sue P, Charlotte, Vicky & Sam worked non-stop and the setup & put away shift made moving the heavy tables and stacks of chairs seem effortless - so lovely to see the teams come together‼️ Proceeds from the day will be shared between the Barlaston Health Centre Warm Space initiative and the Barlaston Volunteers’ Car Scheme. Many thanks to one and all - we look forward to seeing you again next year❣️🤗
The Barlaston Strollers and Striders were not so lucky with the weather this month and only managed a walk around Aston Marina. Sadly, following the snowfall and sudden drop in temperature it was felt too risky for the second walk planned for Trentham. It is a difficult call and the walk leaders are always reluctant to cancel but on certain occasions, such as this one, there was black ice on the pavements and roads and uncertainty as to conditions underfoot in the park. The Christmas strolls, strides & celebrations will be going ahead on the 4th December whatever the weather though – the tree is up and the hall is decorated and already the aroma of mulled wine is wafting through the air… Chef Blackie has enjoyed himself chopping, simmering and spreading… (ahem!) We are looking forward to seeing some Santa hats and flashing antlers - look out for the photos in the next Update! For more information on the walks please give Sandie (Group Leader) a call on 07496 088544 or keep an eye on the Facebook Hub.
The Barlaston Womblers have had some pretty disgusting finds of late – for the last 8 weeks Gordon & Margaret have found a medical bag full of soiled (adult?!) nappies thrown in the hedge, in the same place!! The nappy-chucker seems to have moved on from Blurton Road to Old Road – please keep a look out on the bad bend just past the stables and before the Strongford entrance… Along with nappies, this month’s finds have been mainly the usual take-aways and a lot of carparts, registration plates, windscreen wipers, exhaust pipes and more – who ARE these people??!!! All the regular gang have been out and of course the Wombling Angel has been out in the snow, ice, wind & rain – it must be her waterproof halo that keeps her warm & cheerful. HUGE THANKS to all our wonderful womblers keeping Barlaston Beautiful!!
The Silver Surfers Gurus have had a good turnout of residents since the opening workshop on Scams and continue to meet every month on the 2nd & 4th Thursday from 10 -12 in the Ruth Dickson room at the rear of the Village Hall. Also, you know by now how helpful Steve & Tony are, so if you can’t make a session, give them a ring and they will do their best to come to you! Contact Steve on 07861 617932 or Tony on 07783 009194. Our last Silver Surfer session of the year will be on the 12th December, start date for 2025 to be confirmed.
You may well be relieved to hear that the Pantaloon Players are taking a break from Panto this year and the Proscenium Players will be going it alone. Tickets for Cinders have already sold out (the news must’ve been leaked?!) and there will need to be a quick turn-around at the village hall as it’s the annual Golden Agers Christmas Tea Party on Sunday 8th December. Photos and update to follow on our Website and Facebook, and in the next Update as well as in the January 2025 edition of the Parish magazine.
And finally, make a note in your 2025 diary - the next FILM NIGHT will be on January 18th in the village hall as usual. After much deliberation we have chosen ‘Thelma’ It’s described as a ‘delightful revenge comedy’ and a rather perfect choice to follow on from our Silver Surfers ‘How to recognise & avoid SCAMs workshop’ as it features a grandmother getting her own back on some scammers with the help of her millennial grandson. The reviews are great – ‘Wholesome comedy at its best’, ‘The characters are endearing, the cast is a pleasure to watch’, ‘Surprises & delights for everyone’ and many, many more! Tickets will be on sale at the Barlaston Village Store shortly – we look forward to seeing you there!
We wish you all a very merry Christmas and we’ll be back with our monthly updates next year – look out for your neighbours and yourselves!!
