Where do the months go??? At last we’re getting some summer sun – in between downpours of rain that is! Once again, the Barlaston Strollers and Striders were fairly lucky with the weather and had a local walk on the Downs at the beginning of the month, then a jungle exploration in Hanchurch Woods for the second one. The combination of lots of rain and sun had caused the undergrowth to go wild and the ferns were around 10’ in places! We traversed the occasional swamp, picked wild raspberries and of course we indulged in a spot of tree-hugging… Will, a medical student at the Brinsley Ave Medical Practice joined us on both walks with Andy, the Health & Wellbeing Coach, and we had some interesting discussions about the benefits of walking in nature, particularly on mental health. The Downs walk was not without excitement either and the group dealt with escaped sheep and a herd of cows blocking the path without drama. The Strollers took a different route along the canal, skirting the Downs in a loop to the Upper House Hotel where we all met for Après. They too had a couple of animal skirmishes, encountering some rather grumpy swans and a rare sighting of a wet zebra!
The walks are not always intrepid though and we’d love to see more new members - you don’t have to tell us in advance if you’re coming or not – just turn up at the Plume of Feathers carpark ready to walk at 10am prompt! To keep it simple, we walk on the FIRST & THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EVERY MONTH. Please give Sandie (Group Leader) a call on 07496 088544 if you’d like to know more. August walks will be on the 7th and 21st.
The Barlaston Womblers had a new recruit this month and we welcome Ruby the Rubbish Recycler!! Ruby is the creation of designer/engineer/inventor Dave Moran…. She was made entirely from rubbish found in the lanes of Barlaston & follows in the footsteps of her predecessors Lenny the Litter Lout and Vicky the Vigilante Litter Bandit, also made by Dave! Ruby is currently spreading the Wombling word on Meaford Road but will be taking up another position on Blurton Road very soon. All our Womblers are doing such a great job & work well with the Staffs Borough Council’s Streetscene team headed by Fit John. (We call him Fit John as he is very smiley and good-looking as well as keeping himself physically fit running lots of marathons!) Wedgwood have asked us to join them for their Future Fest event on Saturday 31st August so it would be great if you could join us for a local walk ‘n womble between 10 – 11am at the end of the month and as an incentive you can claim your free ice cream at the finish! Please check the Barlaston Womblers Facebook group for more Rubbish News!!
Thanks to everyone who supported Film Night! We were a little thin on the ground as it coincided with the Football final – Steve & Tony did a good job updating us however and once it was confirmed Spain had beaten us we turned our attention back to the film. It was rather different to our usual showings but the storyline was light-hearted and we had a lot of laughs along the way. Pictured are Sam, Charlotte & Vicki who are usually incognito in the kitchen – thanks ladies! Thanks too to all our helpers, including the audience who always settle in for a good night and rally to help put the chairs away at the end.
The Silver Surfers group is now on a Summer Break until September. We are currently in discussions with The Digital Angels, who we are hoping will launch the Autumn Silver Surfers with a Workshop outlining the various ways they can support us in tackling digital inequality. If you need help in the meantime however, you know how helpful our Techie Gurus are so don’t hesitate to give them a ring. Call Steve on 07861 617932 or Tony on 07783 009194. More information on start dates and location will be notified on Facebook, in Noticeboards, the Parish Gazette & the BCG Monthly Update email.
Have a great summer and we’ll be back with a wrap-up of community events and activities next month!
