Well it’s that time of year again… How are you doing with your New Year Resolutions?? Maybe getting fitter/feeling better/making new friends is on your list?? If so, it would be great to see you! Why not join the Barlaston Strollers & Striders our walking group. We had a great start to the year with 30 walkers for the first walk of the year; both groups did the Wedgwood walk with the Striders extending it around the back of Wedgwood by the woods. As well as the physical exercise and fitness element, we all enjoyed chatting and catching up and there was lots of laughter back at the Plume of Feathers where we went for our end-of-walk cuppa! We walk on the FIRST & THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EVERY MONTH meeting on the car park of the Plume of Feathers ready to depart at 10am prompt. You don’t need to tell us if you’re coming, just turn up, or if you’d like to know more then give Sandie (Group Leader) a call on 07496 088544 and she can answer all your questions! We’re staying local for the next walk too and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 5th February.
We had a fun night on Saturday 18th watching Thelma followed by a game of musical chairs without the music (otherwise referred to as ‘putting them away’!!) Thanks to our loyal support crew in the kitchen, front of house and sound technician but of course most of all thanks to our FANTASIC AUDIENCE who bought lots of raffle tickets, teas and magnums… The proceeds of the raffle (£51.00) have been donated to the Barlaston Guides and we’ll be asking residents to let us know their film recommendations via an on-line Poll. It’s always tricky choosing a film as there are copyright issues and we have to obtain a licence because not all films are available for non-theatrical screenings. We’re checking out availability of Paddington in Peru for the next one but if you have any suggestions please let us know via Facebook or email. We’d also like to give a big SHOUT-OUT to Sanjee & the team at Barlaston Village Store who sell the tickets for us and also offer card purchases, which has made it a lot easier for those who no longer carry cash – Thank Youuuu!
The Barlaston Womblers have been very active this month as always and the Gromble (Group Womble!) was very well attended despite the icy chill on Sunday 19th. We met up at the Village Hall, (some having wombled their way up!) and then spread around the village. We filled 15 bags between us plus a full brown bin of leaves and branches from the hall, which was very satisfying. We warmed up back in the Ruther Dickson room with teas, coffees and homemade scones and flapjacks (thanks Andrew!). Isn’t Barlaston lucky to have so many residents with a litter-pick addiction??!! Thank you wonderful womblers everywhere – please keeeeep pickin’
The Silver Surfers group meet on SECOND & FOURTH Thursday of the month in the Ruth Dickson room (at the rear of Barlaston Village Hall) and despite the snow a number of residents attended the first session on the 9th. Andrew & Michala are usually around to provide refreshments and the tutors, Steve, Tony & Sarah, affectionately known as ‘the Gurus’ can help with a variety of computer/phone/tablet/gadget issues. Whether it’s a one-off problem or just about gaining confidence on a new device, there will be someone to help. Please contact Steve on (07861 617932) or Tony on (07783 009194) for an appointment. The help is given FREE by our volunteers but a small donation is most welcome.
We had several interpretations of this month’s photo competition ‘Silhouettes’ and some stunning photos submitted. But there can only be one winner and the public voted for LISA BOYD for her beautiful photo of a boat on the canal, trees silhouetted against the misty skyline and perfectly reflected in the water – a fabulous shot! If you’d like to see all the photos please check out our Facebook Page or the Hub!
