July 25 Update

The Barlaston Strollers and Striders are definitely on a roll this year and once again had two super walks this month!  We stayed local for the first Wednesday walk and the Striders took a scenic route over the Downs whilst the Strollers did a loop along the canal & back via Wedgwood.  The weather was gorgeous & we were pleased to welcome 3 new walkers as well as 2 visitors from Australia – yes, our reputation extends to the other side of the world now!!  The 2nd walk of the month was an Away-walk but just to Trentham.  We stayed in the park & the route included (don’t worry – Striders only for this bit) a challenging hill which used to be known as the 7-Sisters due to the 7 large oaks at the top overlooking Hanchurch.  We got some cardio-vascular benefits but not much chatting took place on the way up!  As always, both groups enjoyed the company and took some great photos!  August walks will be on the 6th and 20th of the month, meet at The Plume of Feathers ready to walk at 10am prompt.  If you have any questions or would like to know more please give Sandie (Group Leader) a call on 07496 088544.  We look forward to seeing you!

Although we had a smaller audience than usual at Film Night for the showing of The Duke on Saturday 19th it was most enjoyable never the less!  Thanks to everyone who came and of course to our loyal band of organisers; Sam, Tony, Sandie, Irene and Gill.  We’d also like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Sanjee and the team at the Barlaston Village Store who support all our events and sell tickets for us – you can pay by cash or card and it’s particularly helpful for those that are nervous of paying on-line.

Of course the Womblers have been busy as always picking litter and reporting fly-tips to Streetscene, and this month it was great to be joined by a new member – Alfie Gunn!  Alfie wanted to go litter-picking and together with his mum Claire they filled   TWO BAGS on his first outing from Hem Heath Woods and around the cricket club!!  He also went out a couple of days later and did a longer route along the canal, up past One Stop and down Queen Mary’s Drive – what a STAR!  The Barlaston Womblers have sent him a Certificate of Appreciation and his efforts will all count toward his Scouts’ badges.  Mandy & Suzy did a night shift (it was too hot in the day!) and Andrew M got fed up of all the litter along Blurton Road he tackled it single-handedly…  we certainly miss Debbi, Rich & Murphy keeping an eye on Ladies Mile – there was more fly-tipping of cannabis waste there last week!   Joe & Heather and Margaret & Gordon are still regulars although Gordon took a weekend off to go to Glastonbury with his son and grandson (isn’t that great??!!)  Thank you to EVERYONE who picks up litter when they see it – even a small act has a big impact!!

The Barlaston in Bloom group has had a couple of Open Gardens this month and there is lots of chat and tips on WhatsApp, with plants being swapped and an abundance of veg being shared.  If you would like to find out more about the group please contact Pam Spruce on 07824 352862 or Gary Lloyd at garylloyd675@gmail.com – they’d love to hear from you!

The theme for July’s Photo Competition was ‘TREES’ and we had a wonderful selection to choose from.  Congratulations to Paul Phillips whose atmospheric photo of trees in the mist beat off the competition despite the chilly subject matter!  Remember you can see all the photos on our Facebook Page or the Community Hub. We’re keeping focused on summer for the August theme, which is ‘ALL THINGS BRIGHT & BEAUIFUL’ – it could be flowers, blossom, fruit or even an outfit – as long as it’s colourful and in Barlaston of course!  Look out for the Entry post on Facebook a few days before the end of the month.

The Silver Surfers are still on a recess over the summer but you know how helpful our Tech Gurus are, so if you find yourself stuck or needing help with a particular problem just give them a call!  They may be able to help over the phone or if necessary they have been known to make house calls!  Steve hasn’t been very well of late so we suggest you contact Tony at the moment on 07783 009194.

Happy Altruistic August everyone!
