BARLASTON HISTORY SNIPPETS
For those that are interested in local history, check out the Facebook group managed by historian & local resident Tim Cockin. Formerly a teacher, Tim is also an accomplished artist and author, having written several articles and books including The Parish Atlas of England and The Staffordshire Encyclopaedia. Tim manages two popular Facebook Groups: The Barlaston Wassail and Barlaston’s History Snippets which encourages residents to engage and share old photos, articles and newspaper cuttings etc. Tim is currently the holder of the ‘Villager of the Year’ award and we will be sharing more about his endeavours as we approach winter and the famous ‘Barlaston Wassail’ event on New Year’s Eve.‼️
STROLLERS & STRIDERS
BARLASTON STROLLERS & STRIDERS: We’ve been very lucky this summer and had some great walks. 😎🥾 At the beginning of the month we stayed local - the Striders went to the Downs via Hartwell Lane while the Strollers went up the canal to Wedgwood, round the Wedgwood pools, and then both groups met up at the Upper House for refreshments. ☕🫖🍰 Fabulous! and all this on our doorstep - aren’t we lucky?? The second walk was a beautiful, sunny day and we set off from the Red Bull Pub in Church Lawton via canals, fields of corn and woods. Both groups combined and we just managed to miss the afternoon downpours after a well deserved Pub lunch. 😍‼️
We walk on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month. We are a friendly bunch and welcome new joiners. 🤗 You don’t need to tell us you’re coming, just turn up at the Plume of Feathers carpark ready to set off at 10am. Please contact Sandie (Group Leader) on 07496 088544 for more info.

BARLASTON WOMBLERS - RUBBISH NEWS:
⚠️🚯PLEASE SLOW DOWN & KEEP OUR LITTER PICKERS SAFE 🚯⚠️ The Barlaston Womblers are still doing a brilliant job of keeping Barlaston beautiful but we did have a plea from regular Womblers who litter-pick Old Road every week, for traffic to SLOW DOWN. ‼️ Margaret & Gordon, as well as Joe & Heather, Mandy & others are out and about every week, rain or shine picking up other people’s rubbish - a ‘beep’ 👍 to acknowledge them is appreciated and importantly, please give them plenty of space, slow right down and help keep them safe - Thank You. 😍

Facebook Photo Competition Winner‼️Amongst the quirky, weird & wonderful entries a winner emerged - congratulations to Katherina Tams for her dramatic close-up of a wasp taking nectar from a deep pink flower was the run-away winner this month! As always, a huge Thank You to all our entrants & voters for continuing to make this such an interesting competition and remember you can see all the photos on our Facebook Page & the Barlaston Community Hub. Next month’s theme will be ‘September Walks in Barlaston' - look out for details towards the end of the month.
ST. JOHN’S PARISH CHURCH
August is traditionally a quiet month at St. John’s, although our Choir has been
meeting every Thursday evening for their practice and has been leading our singing
on a Sunday morning; and our new vicar, Helen, has been busy going around the
parish getting to know different people and community groups. As we enter into
September, many of our other regular activities will begin again including our Mosaic
activities - our ‘Sunday School’ for our children and young people; our Bible Study
group which meets on a Tuesday evening; and our Oasis café on a Thursday
morning where everyone is welcome to come along for a cuppa and a chat and toys
are provided for babies and young children.
We will also be continuing our regular pattern of Sunday services:
First Sunday of the Month – All Together Service, 10.30 am
All other Sundays of the Month – Holy Communion with Mosaic,10.30 am
And if you can’t make a Sunday morning, we also have our Said Service of Holy Communion every Wednesday at 10.30 am.

In November, Sat 28th, we will be collaborating with St John's Church for a dual site Christmas market featuring a choir performance and a visit from Santa.

WARM SPACE (Sue Tudor)
In August, we have enjoyed a visit from a couple of Army Squaddies. Part of their duties is Community engagement. They chose us. We learned how and why they joined the army, all about their various tours of duty, and all the countries and opportunities they have experienced.
On 28th August we had Bingo with CASH prizes.
Friday 4th September we have Jill Hancock demonstrating how to make 3 lovely flower arrangements.
Friday 11th September. It is a factory tour of Wedgwoods and a light lunch.
Friday 18th September. It is Quizzes and Wordsearch with Val.
Friday 25th September it is the MacMillain Cancer Research Coffee Morning at Barlaston Health Centre. The Warm Space will be supporting the event that day. Any donations of Cakes, Raffle Prizes, Tombola Prizes would be appreciated. Please give to Reception Manager Suzi.
Tip of the month: Put all your important documents into a tin box with a handle. In case of fire it will be quick to grab and run.
The Barlaston Warm Space is every Friday Morning between 9.30am and 11.30am at Barlaston Health Centre. Always home made cake and all the tea and coffee you can drink. Open to all.
