February 2025 update

barlastoncommunity

Updated: Mar 11

Well, the question on everyone’s lips must be “Will it ever stop raining??”  Luckily our February walks have managed to go ahead although we did have to make adjustments due to the boggy conditions underfoot!  We visited the Downs for the first walk but our intention to use the footpath at the bottom of the Upper House field was spoiled due the amount of rainwater collecting by the gate.  Instead we took cars to Washdale Lane and parked by the ford.  It was a beautiful day and the Striders took a clockwise route around the top overlooking Barlaston & Tittensor, over to the other side pausing for some acrobatics & a photoshoot at the Trig point, whilst the Strollers followed the river crossing the Stone Lions Bridge & returned via the picnic area.  We were lucky to have a member of the Stone Lions in the group & Paul told us the full story of the bridge, including its repair & replacement.  The second walk was around Apedale Country Park.  Not such a sunny day for this one, in fact it was very cold & windy!  We still got a great turnout however and some of the group visited the museum, with the others preferring to stay in the café and sample the oatcakes and delicious homemade apple pie.

We’re a friendly bunch and remember you can dip in and out of the walks - give Sandie (Group Leader) a call on 07496 088544 to find out more.  We meet on the first & third Wednesday of every month at the Plume of Feathers carpark ready to walk at 10am – why not give it a go next month?  We’ll be walking on the 5th & 19th March.

The Silver Surfers continue to meet every month on the 2nd & 4th Thursday from 10 -12 in the Ruth Dickson room at the rear of the Village Hall so whatever device you need a little help with, give our Gurus a call and make an appointment!  Contact Steve on 07861 617932 or Tony on 07783 009194.  Sarah and Andrew will usually also be on hand; Sarah’s a wiz with phones and ipads and Andrew is great with websites and general information.  You’ll get a cuppa & a biscuit, the help is FREE but a donation is always appreciated!

We received a lovely message from the Barlaston Brownies & Guides to say Thank You to everyone who bought raffle tickets at the last Film Night.  The money raised was divided between the two groups and will be used to give the girls a variety of local activities.  If anyone is interested in finding out more about what joining the Brownies & Guides has to offer please contact Helen (Guides) on 07800 662296 or Deb (Brownies) on 07725 255320. We are lucky to have two thriving groups in the village!

The Barlaston Womblers have been busy as always – look out for those tell-tale green bags dotted around the village!  As well as the wonderful gang of regulars who womble every week (Mandy, Joe & Heather, Soph, David, Andrew M, Debbi, Margaret & Gordon, Charlotte, Vicky & Martin, Stephen 2-Buckets, Sandie, Lynn & Michala, this month we had a few additional helpers:  Councillor Chris Hurst had beaten Michala to a litter-pick around the Downs carpark whilst he and his pal, another Chris, were working at levelling up the carpark and cutting back the overgrown bushes, and Cheryl, with her helpful pooch Betty, had a day off to volunteer in the community and chose to litter-pick!!  Betty chose a big loop from the Plume, along the canal towards Wedgwood, up QMD and down Station Road.  Please look out for the Womblers and give them a toot or thumbs-up as a Thank You for the great job they do in keeping Barlaston beautiful!!  There will be a Blurton Road Blitz on Saturday 8th March if you fancy joining the Womblers – meet at the Country Cabin at 10am!

The next Film Night is Saturday 29th March and we’ve just been notified that we’re allowed to show Paddington in Peru.  We’ve all enjoyed the Paddington Bear series of films and this one follows the Brown family as they are enveloped in a thrilling adventure to solve the mystery disappearance of Paddington’s beloved Aunt Lucy in the Peruvian jungle.  BYOB if you’d like a glass of wine, or enjoy a cuppa and a biscuit courtesy of our very helpful Kitchen Crew.  Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm immediately after the raffle (all proceeds go to a local charity).  Tickets will be available soon from Sanjee and the team at the Barlaston Village Store, Orchard Place.

The winner of February’s Photo Competition was ADRIAN LEWIS for his stunning photo of a swan with her cygnets – a heartwarming depiction of love in its purest form.  Congratulations Adrian!!  The theme was ‘Love’ and if you want to see the variety of cute, funny, stylish & scenic photos submitted please take a look at our Facebook Page or Community Hub.  Next month’s theme will be SPRINGTIME - look out for notifications on Facebook a few days before the end of the month – it’s a bit of fun with the FB community voting for the winner!

Parish Gazette available now from Millers Phasmacy, Barlaston Village Store and St.Johns Church.

Last but not least, if you are interested in gardening, then please come along to a Gardeners Social on Wednesday 5th March 6.30pm – 7.30pm in the village hall.  Join us for a cuppa/glass of wine and a chat with like-minded people.  There was a lot of interest in the recent FB post about Open Gardens – now let’s make it happen!  We hope to see you there.

Have a good month and lets look forward to a warmer and drier Spring, surely just around the corner!
